Saturday Yard Sale Finds

This week I had a Union meeting scheduled at 9am so I was only able to hit a few Yard sales. Fortunately, 2 of them were community sales with many people participating. We only purchased a few items.

This is the 2006 Official White House Christmas tree Ornament. We have a couple of these and they are really pretty. It was purchased for 2$

From the same lady we purchased these three rings. They are high Quality Costume jewelry that will make a perfect stocking stuffer for one of my girls this Christmas

Next we picked up another lamp. I like these lamps with the cast iron base. We have a couple in our family room and this one goes good with the theme. The shade is cool looking too. $3
A pair of black converse tennis shoes. I bought these exact shoes, size and color 3 weeks ago for Jenna for $34.99. Found these for $2
Shure wireless guitar transmitter and receiver kit. 5$
I can rock out on my electric guitar from anywhere in the house without having cables. Or we could resell it on eBay for $100 plus......

New Computer

I got a super deal on a new computer last night. It is the Delll PowerEdge T105 Server. It was purchased from the Dell website using a $367 off coupon I found on a bargain hunters website. The Machine was normally $606 then at checkout you apply the coupon code ?96PP3J540MWBR and receive the $367 off. I did have to pay $25 shipping and $15 tax so the total was $279. This is jus the machine I have been looking for to set up our Linux system here at the house. It has enough ram to run windows within the Linux shell. My invoice stated it won't be delivered until October the 8th.

SPECS:
Dual Core AMD Athlon 4450B; 2.3GHz,2X512K Cache
2GB, DDR2, 800MHz, 2x1GB, Single Ranked DIMMs
2 Hard Drives: 160GB 7.2K RPM SATA 3Gbps 3.5-in Cabled
16X SATA DVD Drive
On-Board Single Gigabit Network Adapter
One Year Dell Factory Warranty

I'll have to add a decent video card and CD Burner. I'll pull both from another Dell system.

Book Reveiw: John Grisham's The Client

I'm  really hopeing to be able to read more books as I get older and less demands are made of my time. The ideal time with the bad foot has given me the opportunity to read a few novels. I just finished John Grisham's The Client this morning.

This book is incredibly well written and the plot is riveting. Mark Sway is an 11 year old boy who is out teaching his brother how to smoke. While out the boys meet the lawyer of Barry "The Blade" Muldano. Mark's life is forever changed as he learns the most sought after secret in the U.S. Now Mark's brother is in the hospital in shock, and the F.B.I. and the mafia are on his tail. The only other person that Mark can trust and that knows his secret is Reggie Love. A 4 year lawyer who specializes in child law. Reggie is coming off a bought with depression and the loss of both her children to a nasty divorce. Now the race is own as Reggie attempts to protect her new client from the F.B.I. and his life from the mob. The clock is ticking. Can Reggie save the day and keep Mark safe. The plot of this book is well developed and the detail is exquisite. I could not put the book down and if you like Grisham books or suspense neither will you.

Back to School Night

I have not attended a back to school night since my son Jack was in 4th grade. Last night I attended back to school night at Jenna's school, Arthur Slade. I had the chance to introduce myself to her teachers, hear about the curriculum and see her classrooms. Two of her classes are AP type classes that only have 16 students in each of them. First is advanced literature, which is taught by the Principal of the school. It is the only class he teaches and from the presentation can tell he really goes all out. I came away ready to read Oliver Twist so I can follow along with Jenna during the year.
The other class that stuck out was the advance Social Studies class taught by assistant principal Mr Ritz. He too focus on giving students a wide array of topics and left a good bit of the responsibility to the student. No spoon feeding these kids. He expects them to take good notes, and decipher his lectures on their own. If he talks about it in class they need to know the material.

U. S. Navy Nuke Schooling

Our Son Jack is an enlisted US Navy sailor stationed at the Nuclear Power Command in Goose Creek, SC. attending Nuclear Power School. I thought I'd describe a little of what he is going through.
After Boot camp he successfully completed 6 months Machinists Mate School and promoted to MM Petty officer 3rd class. Now he is in Power School.

He is there  preparing for something monumental: an education that will teach him how to run a nuclear power plant aboard a U.S. Navy submarine or aircraft carrier. The pace in the school is really fast. Studying takes up a lot of their time. Students put in more time here than they would at college. Graduates of the nuclear program make up only 3 percent of the Navy, but they fit into the top 10 percent of the Navy. Following this school will be six-month Nuclear Prototype School. By that time, enlisted personnel have a knowledge of operation, maintenance and supervision of a naval nuclear propulsion plant.

The staff at the school is very dedicated to making sure the sailors succeed. Tutoring and help is always available. On carriers [nuclear-trained Sailors] are relied on for just about everything. The job is an endless pursuit of perfection - a mindset. Training is a way of life in the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program.
Jack has only 7 more weeks until he's completed Power school. We wish him all the best for a successful Naval career. Mom and Dad are very Proud.

1995 British Open Championship

I remember this like it was yesterday. Very funny.
After John Daly sinks the winning putt to win his second major championship streaker Mark Roberts runs across the green.
"As I ran, I seemed to gather pace (it had nothing to do with the FBI, CIA, CID, and INTERPOL chasing me) because of the hills and slopes on the course. When I looked around, I was being chased by my new mate (who looked as though he was about to dive off a diving board for some reason) and the cast from Benny Hill. All the police who had come after me were running in a straight line; about 4 of them in total. I couldn't help laugh as I ran, especially when I heard my mate say ''slow down will you?''. I turned around again and saw him going red in the face, sweat pouring off him, as well as the police, and then saw George Bush and Prince Andrew clap and cheer as I ran past.

Saturday Yard Sale Finds

It was beautiful day for going to yard sales. The only drawback was that I has a Union meeting at 10am so I only had about 1 and a half hours to hit a few sales. There were a few community sales so that is what I targeted. Anyway, here's what I found.

3 Van Husen Dress shirts. Seller wanted $5 a piece and since they were all recently dry cleaned I took 3 for $10.00
White Nike Air High tops $3 will sell on eBay if the don't fit well
Black Adidas for Jenna $1 Pink laces are a hit.
Original Lawn Darts (Free) They don't sell these anymore. We'll play and live dangerously.
Nintendo Game Cube. Brand new Seller wanted $10 got it for $8 will resell
Golf Shadow box 3$ something for my bare walls in my office.
Wii game My Sims for Jenna $10  I overpaid for this but turns out it retails for about $20
Development of the Golf Ball  $2 cool thing for office. Had $42 label on the bottom.
Guitar Strap. (Free) found it on a free table. What's not to like.
Fast Rechargeable battery charger $4 Daughter Jamie needs one and will find one under the tree.
2 pair of Mudd jeans $1 a piece. For Jenna or donate if she doesn't like them.

The Flu has Entered our Home

Poor Jenna awoke this morning feeling terrible. Apparently, the flu has already begun going around in her school. She has a headache, her body aches and she has a temperature of 102.7. It is most likely she has early stages of the flu. All I can do is try and keep her comfortable, feed her lots of fluids and give her ibuprofen in order to reduce the fever.Best things for her to do are stay in bed, get plenty of rest, and drink lots of fluids. Hopefully it won't get worse and most importantly I don't want her to infect Maureen and I. In an effort to keep the flu isolated it's probably best that we quarantine her to her room.
Here are steps to help reduce the spread of the flu in your home:
  • keep the sick person away from other people as much as possible (see “placement of the sick person”) especially others who are at high risk for complications from influenza
  • remind the sick person to cover their coughs, and clean their hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub often, especially after coughing and/or sneezing
  • have everyone in the household clean their hands often, using soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub. Children may need reminders or help keeping their hands clean.
  • Keep the sick person in a room separate from the common areas of the house. Keep the sickroom door closed.
  • Have the sick person wear a facemask – if available and tolerable – if they need to be in a common area of the house near other persons.
  • If possible, sick persons should use a separate bathroom. This bathroom should be cleaned daily with household disinfectant

Week 2 Fantasy Football Preveiw

Week 1 turned out to be the week of wrong decisions for the Repeat Offenders. The team appeared matched up well against Thunder Cat's with a strong core of running backs in Steve Slaton, Darren McFadden and Jamaal Lewis. Thunder Cats jumped out early with a phenomenal performance from Drew Brees scoring 6 TD's for 46 points. None of my backs performed well except those on the bench. My leading backs were Julius Jones and Patrick Clayton. Both had 23 points. If I started either one I win for the week. Very frustrating week. Obviously the Repeat Offenders are a very deep team with bench scoring like this. Hopefully, we'll get it right this week.
The Repeat Offenders face off against TASFUIA.
Starting Lineup week 2:
QB: Jason Campbell. The skins face St. Louis at home this week. Chicago faces Pittsburgh so I decided to bench Jay Cutler.
RB: Steve Slaton was a big disappointment last week but I still will have to start him this week against the Titans. He ran for over 100 both times the met last year and coming off a bad week I'd expect him to turn it around.
RB: Julius Jones get the nod over Jamaal Lewis. Lewis is banged up a little and Jones is playing against SF and had a nice game last weekend.
WR: Greg Jennings had a solid week last week and should continue this week against Cincy.
WR/RB: Either Mcfadden or Patrick Clayton. It'll be a game time decision.
TE: Jeremy Shockey loves to antagonize Eagles fans. Look for another big game here.
K: Jason Elam..... Solid
Defense: Jacksonville is starting over the Jets. Jets face New England and Brady might light them up. The Jaguars held the Colts to 14 and face the Cardinals at Home.
TASFUIA coming off a big win last week is in for a little reality check this week.

I'm a Mountaineer Fan

Now that my oldest daughter is in Morgantown attending West Virginia University I think I will become a WVU Mountaineer fan. Jamie belongs to the WVU Maniacs, the student organization that supports WVU athletics. Becoming a college football fan will be a new experience for me. Unfortunately, I did not attend a 4 year college therefore I never really had an allegiance to any school. I have rooted for the Maryland Terrapins for years because they play in my home state . I still follow both teams but will have to root for WVU. Lets Go Mountaineers!!!!!

Leg Cast Removed

Yesterday I went to the Doctor to have the cast taken of my leg. I had a tendon tear repaired on August 4th and have been in a cast for 6 weeks. You can see the post Peroneal Tendon Injury for details on that. Anyway as you can see from the picture there still is a good bit of swelling and I cannot get a shoe on comfortably. I thought I was going to begin physical therapy once I was out of the cast but the doctor siad that in his experience with this type of injury it is best for the patient to wait a couple weeks before they begin therapy. This increases the success rate significantly. This means I could possibly be out of work for another month. I'm not sure I even have enough sick leave to cover that. I'll call the office later today and find out. I'm going to try and do some light walking and stationary bike stuff to see if I can speed up the recovery time and get some use of my ankle back. I made an appointment with a physical therapy office here in town and it will start on September 29th.

Patrick Swayze Dies at 57

Actor Patrick Swayze, whose turn as a smoldering dance instructor in "Dirty Dancing" made him one of the iconic film stars of the 1980s, died on Monday after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 57.

Swayze had been a 60-a-day smoker for years, and research shows that smokers are twice as likely to get pancreatic cancer as non-smokers. Swayze acknowledged the likely connection between the habit and his condition. "I will go so far as to say probably smoking had something to do with my pancreatic cancer," he said.

Even after he was diagnosed with the disease he still could not rid himself of his smoking habit. He did cut down significantly but was unable to quit. I'm not trying to be judgmental if he wanted to smoke in his final days that's his choice and I am ok with it. It's just too bad cigarette smoking has taken another gifted life at such an early age.

Saturday's Yard Sale Finds

This past Saturday we left the house around 7am with the GPS and Local newspaper in hand. Maureen and Jenna both came along since I am still on crutches. (My cast is being removed on Tuesday.) In the past I've found that the fall months of September and October tend to be the most successful Yard Sale months because the children are back in school, the weather is nice and people clean out in the fall. Anyway, we hit about dozen sales and drove by another 10 that weren't worth  me getting out of the car for. Here what we found:

  • Bed raisers 1$ College kids use them to raise there beds to fit more stuff underneath
  • Neat metal brass clock 3$
  • Gallon of Anti-Freeze 1$
  • Grilling Tools to use on my new grill  1$ each
  • Electric Staple gun. 1$
  • Suede Rockport Shoes 2$ if they don't fit well, I'll sell them on Ebay.

  • Brand New Still had the tags Finger Nail set in carrying case 3$ this was for Jenna
  • 4 reams of HP paper 25c each 1$
  • Metal lamp with Shade possible for guest room 3$
  • 4 John Grisham Books 25c each 1$
  • Pin Head point Impression Nick Knack 25c Jenna an I will play with it for awhile
  • Cute kids calendar 25c
  • The Soprano Family Cookbook. 1$ Loved the show 30$ book had to have it.

  • Taylor Made Ti 2 Bubble Driver Like New 2$ I should get $15-20 on eBay
  • Round Up Weed Killer Sprayer 2$ I've been looking for one of these.

  • Antique wooden full size bed Frame. $25 We'll clean this up and use it in our guest room.

There was an add in the paper for an Upscale Yard Sale. I don't like these type of add because to me they mean it will more often than not be an overpriced yard sale. What they are saying is that our junk is better than your junk or the next guys. Anyway, we decided to go to the sale and true to form all their junk was overpriced. Granted they did have some nice stuff. To me just because your old clothes are Holister, Abercrombie and Ralph Lauren they are still used clothing and should be priced accordingly. Same goes for all your other stuff. People go top Yard Sales looking for bargains. If you want to get rid of your "upscale" junk price it correctly.
Maureen found this bag and thought Jamie would like it. Of course it was overpriced at $10.  I offered the lady $7 which still was too much. She frowned and rolled her eyes as she took my money.

The Joys of Retirement

This was passed on by my friend Mark who was as chemical engineering graduate.

As we get older we sometimes begin to doubt our ability to "make a difference" in the world.
It is at these times that our hopes are boosted by the remarkable
achievements of other "seniors" who have found the courage to take on challenges
that would make many of us wither. Harold Sclumberg is such a person.

I've often been asked, 'What do you old folks do now that you're retired'?
Well. I'm fortunate to have a chemical engineering background,
and one of the things I enjoy most is turning beer, wine, Scotch, and margaritas into
urine.  And I'm pretty damn good at it, too!!

9/11 8th Anniversary

It is the 8th anniversary of that tragic attack on the United States resulting in the deaths of nearly 3,000 people at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon and the airliner over western Pennsylvania. I remember that day like it was yesterday. I've read lots of stuff on the different theories as to who was responsible. Nevertheless these Towers went down and today is a day to remember those who died that day and all the brave men and women who helped in the recover efforts.
Here are some quotes of famous people after the 9 11 attacks:
“Freedom itself was attacked this morning by a faceless coward. Freedom will be defended!” by President George W. Bush, September 11, 2001.
“No just cause can be advanced by terrorism.” by Koffi Anan.
“If the culprits are Muslim, they have twisted the teachings of Islam. Whoever performed, or is behind, the terrorist attacks in the United States of America does not represent Islam. God is not behind assassins.” by Muhammad Ali.
“The best defense against terrorism is a strong offensive against terrorists. That work continues.” by President George W. Bush.
“These acts shattered steel, but they cannot dent the steel of America’s resolve.” by President George W. Bush.
“At this critical moment, the United States can rely on its Allies in North America and Europe for assistance and support. NATO solidarity remains the essence of our Alliance. Our message to the people of the United States is that we are with you. Our message to those who perpetrated these unspeakable crimes is equally clear: you will not get away with it.” by NATO North Atlantic Council, 11 Sep 2001.
“Time is passing. Yet, for the United States of America, there will be no forgetting September the 11th. We will remember every rescuer who died in honor. We will remember every family that lives in grief. We will remember the fire and ash, the last phone calls, the funerals of the children. ” by President George W. Bush.
9/11 was a terrible day in American History. Lets not forget....

Welcome to our Home Mimi (cat)

Since our household was reduced to just the three of us, Jamie left for College and Jack in US Navy, we decided to get another cat. Maureen and Jenna pick adopted our little friend from a local rescue and brought her home last month. It has taken some time for her and Maddie (our other cat) to get adjusted to one another. Mimi is quite the adventurer. She loves climbing the walls and getting as high as she can on our furniture. She also loved to destroy our furniture. Within a couple weeks she destroyed a number of wicker hampers and would scratch wherever she could. We decided since she is going to be an indoor cat it was best to declaw her. I don't consider it cruel or inhumane. She has all her need met and will be a very happy and content cat.

The procedure is not without pain but it is short lived and you have a lifetime of a well behaved cat who otherwise will just tick you off by destroying your favorite furniture even though they have umpteen places for them to claw where they are supposed to. Think of it. Which is worse the cat losing its claws and the two of you getting along for the cats life? Or a cat always in trouble for doing what comes naturally? Cats don't miss those claws once they get used to it. And that takes very little time for them to do.

I Love a good game of Scrabble

I enjoy the game of Scrabble. In fact I am quite competitive at it as my wife will attest too. These days it's actually hard to find someone to play and most of my scrabble is against the computer.  Hopefully, Maureen and I won't be so involved in the Scrabble club in our later years that she decides to put a stone like this on my grave.

Todays Stock Market Trades

IRA Account:

Sold DPTR At 3.25 I bought this on 8/31 @ 1.88 had a nice 50% gain here. Closed @ 3.40 Down to 3.25 in AH. I expect this to fall back into the mid 2's and I'll look at it again.

Notes: Nice 20% Pop on Generex (GNBT) FDA approved experimental use of its diabetes drug candidate Generex Oral-lyn. This could continue to climb fast.

Natural Gas ripping north. 2.50 Very well could have been the floor as many had predicted. My UNG shares are up 20% from last week. January Calls are up 60%.

The Gold Fields (GFI) Puts I bought last week. Most likely will expire worthless next week.

I still think the Bull is going to keep rolling for now. September been historically down. So far not happening this year. We shall see.

The Most Undervalued RB: Jamal Lewis

Nick Pietz, Fantasy Football Guest Writer
Jul 20, 2009

Jamal Lewis. Yes, let me repeat myself …Jamal Lewis. I know, I know, you are all thinking what??? There is no way he is the most undervalued running back going into 2009. I could have gone with someone obvious, someone coming off a down year like Ryan Grant, or someone who was hurt and could bounce back strong like Darren McFadden, but I wanted to take a different approach and look outside the box a bit. Now you are saying ‘ok, I can see Lewis is a little undervalued but come on.’ He plays for the Browns, in the AFC North, plays Pittsburgh and Baltimore twice a year, plus he will turn the dreaded 30-years-old in August. Yeah I know all of this, and maybe that’s why he is ranked 29th by Fantasy Sharks, but I see another solid year or two left in the tank for Lewis. Oh yeah, I almost forgot, he has almost 2,400 career carries … ouch!

Maybe it’s just the optimist in me, but I see those 2,400 career carries in eight* years as a positive. (*Not including 2001 when Lewis missed the entire season due to an ACL injury) Lewis has a career average of 19.7 attempts a game and only twice in his career has he played less than 15 games in a season. One of those seasons being the previously mentioned 2001. Not many running backs in the Top 20 can say that, and in case you forgot Lewis is ranked 29th.

I keep hearing experts say that Lewis is not a home-run threat and that he doesn’t break the big runs. This may be true, but Lewis is a bruiser and incredibly consistent with a career average of 4.2 yards a carry. Not too bad when you consider he’s not too far behind LT’s career avg. of 4.4 yards a carry. Also factor in the almost 20 carries a game Lewis will get, and he is bound to break a couple of long TD scampers. I understand that historically Lewis is not a TD machine (only once in his career has he had 10+ TDs) but he is very consistent and does average 7.25 TDs a season. Furthermore, it is almost impossible to predict touchdowns in a given season. This could be the year that Braylon Edwards gets knocked out at the one-yard line multiple times, leaving Lewis to get the vulture touchdowns … you never know.

A couple more facts you need to consider before drafting. Only once in his career has he had less than 1,000 yards rushing. (2005-906 yards) Oh yeah, did I forget to mention that Lewis does have a 2,000 yard season under his belt? With the addition of new head coach Eric Mangini, look for Lewis to take over the role that Thomas Jones had for the Jets last year. Mangini showed that he wasn’t afraid to give his power back the ball and let him run. Look for Jerome Harrison to take on a role like Leon Washington did last year for the Jets. If you are not on the Jamal bandwagon yet, look at his schedule down the stretch and I’m sure he will be moving up your draft board. He has a very favorable schedule the last seven weeks of the season and four of those games are against Detroit, Cincinnati, Kansas City and Oakland, who finished 32and 31st respectively in rush yards against last year. Just remember the name Jamal Lewis when you are creating your rankings this year; don’t forget the key to fantasy football is all about value, and Lewis could be a great value this year.

2009 Fantasy Football Team Draft

Last evening the Fantasy league I'm in hosted the 2009 Fantasy Football draft.
I had the 11th pick out of 12 teams. I likes my position because I got the 11th an 14th overall pick. My 1st pick was Houston running back Steve Slaton. He was by far the best fantasy back on the board. Slaton is primed for a breakout year, He gets all Houston's goal line carries and should do well as my #1 back.

With my next pick I selected Green Bay wide receiver Greg Jennings. I had planned on taking a back here but 4 wide outs went in the 1st round so I figured I better get one at this point or there might not be any remaining #1's when it got back to me. Jennings is coming off a solid year and I like the Green Bay offense. I see potential here for 9-11 TD's

The surprise of the first 2 rounds was Thunder Cats selecting Drew Brees along with Peyton Manning as his second pick. Odd that 1st 2 picks can't both start. Anyway felt it changed the dynamics a little.

My third round pick needed to be a QB. It was a toss up between Jay Cutler and Ben Roethlisberger. A player to keep an eye on with Cutler now in Chicago is Earl Bennett. Remember Cutler to Bennett was one of the most prolific combos in Vanderbuilt history. They know each other and I would think this could become an explosive combo when the bears do pass.

2 picks later in round 4 I went with KC running back Larry Johnson.
With Kansas City's receiving corps less than perfect, Matt Cassell possibly on the shelf Johnson could get the ball as many as 20 times in close games. Perfect #2 back.

Round 5 opened with the 1st defense being selected. Bundy's Boys selected Pittsburgh. I felt it early for defense.

My plan was to be as deep as I could at running back therefore I was looking for another back in round 5. I chose Darren McFadden of the Oakland Raiders. I had him on my team last year and it was an up and down type year. The Oakland offense is a mess. He really is the only weapon the have. He should get many touches as long as he stays healthy.

San Diego WR Vincent Jackson was my next choice. He should be in line for a solid year after a breakout 2008 season. With Rivers at the helm here is another wide out who could go for 8-10 TD's

A lot of defenses went in the next 2 rounds. After the top 2-3 I think the defenses are pretty bunched together. I figured wait another round or 2 for a defense. I went with NO tight end Jeremy Shockey in round 7. The high power offense in NO Shockey and Bress could bhe 1-2 punch. Hopefully he'll stay healthy and get back to his old form.

Next I went with Cleveland RB Jamaal Lewis. He might be 30, but he's the solid No. 1 in Cleveland and will get almost all of the carries as long as he's healthy. No happy feet Jamaal.

I really liked the pickup of Chicago wide out Devon Hester in round 9. With his speed he could be a good target for my quarterback Jay Cutler. Having both starting could lead to some big point weeks for Repeat Offenders.

Round 10, I had to pick up a defense. It was a toss up between the Skins and the Jets. Ryan brought in some solid new bodies including some very good ex-Ravens. They should be a very disruptive defense that creates a lot of turnovers and also has Leon returning kicks.

Late in round 11 Julius Jones was still on the board. Great #3 or 4 back. Any problems with Edggerin James and Jones could be seeing a lot of action. Jones had 140 yards at home vs the Rams last year.

Early in Round 12 I decided on the Home Team. I took Jason Campbell as my #2 QB. He is a very suitable backup quarterback and maybe #1 when the skins are at home against some weaker teams.

I took Atlanta kicker Jason Elam in the 13th. Some teams like to chose kicker as the last pick, not me. Elam was 1-of-2 from 50-plus yards but was a perfect 10-for-10 from 40-to-49 yards out. With the Falcons offense expected to remain powerful in 2009 he should have plenty of opportunities.

In round 14 I made a mistake and took 36 year old Carolina WR Mushin Muhammad. He's really not going to start but I guess he looks ok on paper. I really don't have much to say about this pick except that the clock ran out and I made a bad choice.

My last 4 picks were just backups. I got Ravens TE Todd Heap in 15th round. Pretty solid backup in case Shockey gets hurt or isn't performing. Then Patrick Clayton from Dallas another good late round pickup. Finally backup defense Jacksonville and kicker Dan Carpenter from Miami.

So there you have it. The Repeat Offenders 2009 Braggin Rights Fantasy Football lineup.
Hopefully we'll be back where we were in 2007 "Champions"

A Man and his Grill.

The grill is the glory tool of masculine cooking. When a man steps in front of his Grill, you'd think he'd invented fire instead of just using it to cook a few steaks. But that's what's so great about grilling: The techniques are healthy, the food is sublime, and the credit you receive is as high as the heat. Maybe that's why every country has its own ways of coaxing gems from the coals. From the spicy salsas of South America to the herb-smoked meats of the Middle East, our culinary world tour is delicious proof that there is nothing better (or easier) than taming the flame.

I have been wanting a gas grill for the backyard for quite sometime. Our family really enjoys having food prepared on the grill. Unfortunately, I have been using a little Weber Charcoal grill for the past 2 seasons. Charcoal grilling has a nice flavor but the time inconveniences and bagged charcoal make gas grilling much more appealing.

Last week I began the search for a quality Vermont Casting Grill. On Friday I found one on Craigslist and Maureen and I went by and worked out a deal with the owner. Unfortunately, it wouldn't fit int he car and I had to go back on Sunday to pick it up. We were very pleased with the grill and it cleaned up very nice. I look forward to many years of enjoyable outdoor cooking on our new grill.

The Vermont Castings VM450 is a sophisticated top-end model, which will provide a truly enjoyable grilling experience. This unit has all the bells and whistles and an ultra-large 600-square-inch cooking surface that will be the envy of the neighborhood.

With five burners and 48,000 Btu of cooking power, the VM450 is always ready to grill. This unit has an all-stainless-steel exterior, including a heavy-duty hood, cabinet console, side shelves with condiment trays and slide-out front storage drawer. An LP tank sits nestled inside the cabinet, leaving extra storage space where you can keep utensils, trays and other non-combustible supplies.

This grill comes equipped with a 15,000-Btu side burner, which is handy for cooking baked beans, heating sauces, sauteing onions or any other stovetop-type cooking desired.

With four burners, the VM450 quickly heated up surpassing the thermometer's 600-degree Fahrenheit mark in less than 15 minutes. Since each burner is operated independently, you can easily adjust the temperature to achieve the desired results with whatever foods you are cooking.

The 16.5x36-inch cooking surface is divided into four removable grids, each having a handy thumb-notch for convenient removal. The enamel-coated cast-iron grids were wide enough to accommodate larger items such as steaks while also keeping smaller items, such as shrimp or cut vegetables from falling through.

Performance-wise, the VM450 is superb. All areas of the grill were evenly heated so our foods in the front cooked as well as those in the back and on the sides. The burners run from front to back, rather than side to side, and tented sear grids sit just above each burner to help fan out the heat.

Additional features on the Vermont Castings VM450 include a handy 15x23-inch side shelf, two 4.25x15-inch front condiment trays, two magnetic closing cabinet doors, a 7x36-inch wire warming rack, and a 7x22-inch front slide-out drawer, which is perfect for holding utensils. Alternatively, you can hang the cooking utensils on either side of the grill using the notched hangers.

The sturdy cart is enclosed on all sides with two magnetic-close front doors. Another feature that is definitely worth mentioning is the handy light feature, which provides an orange glow around the burner rings and also a separate cook light for easy nighttime grilling. Four swivel casters make maneuvering the grill easy from any direction. The casters can also be locked by stepping on the lock lever so the grill will stay put.

All-in-all, the VM450 is an excellent performer and, for all it delivers -- in quality stainless-steel materials, amount of grilling space and extra features -- this unit is also a great value.

Golf: Rookie long driver is enjoying the ride

By DAVE BROUGHTON, Crofton Capital Papers
Published 08/23/09

Eddie Milligan looks every part the long drive competition rookie. While others boast an array of custom-made drivers, Milligan's hopes rest solely on a $100 club he found through a classified ad.
The 22-year-old Milligan has advanced through two regional competitions to qualify for the Re/Max World Long Drive Championship to be held in Mesquite, Nev., at the end of October. Long drive contestants must keep their ball within a 50-yard wide grid to be counted.

Milligan, a Crofton resident, earned the trip to Nevada by finishing fourth with an against-the-wind drive of 349 yards at the Region 1 qualification event last weekend at Oakland Hills Golf Club in Conneaut Lake, Pa. Approximately 90 local qualifiers from all over the United States and Canada competed in the open division, a double-elimination format consisting of eight rounds. The winning drive was 360 yards.

Previously, Milligan had finished in a tie for second with a drive of 387 yards in local qualifying held at Arundel Golf Park.

Not bad for the former star golfer at South River High School and Anne Arundel Community College.

"It's always been my strength, so I was pretty confident going in,'' Milligan said of his distance off the tee. "I'd always thought about doing it but I never did. This year I went online and got the information and entered the local qualifier.''

Milligan was an all-county selection while at South River, and qualified for the national junior college tournament both years while at AACC. He currently attends UMBC, which doesn't have a golf team.

Each year an excess of 10,000 competitors attempt to qualify for the RE/MAX Finals. These qualification events occur at approximately 300 sites around the globe. The event offers a total purse of $550,000. The finals will be shown on tape on ESPN2.

Milligan, who hopes to garner a sponsorship deal while in Nevada, has been practicing at Nighthawk Golf Center in Crofton

Employee Free Choice Act

When workers are free to choose to join a union, our economy can work for everyone again. That’s why we need the Employee Free Choice Act—a bill in Congress that would help level the playing field and give workers the freedom to choose a union.
The Employee Free Choice Act:

* Helps America’s working families improve their standard of living. Workers in unions earn 30 percent higher wages and are 59 percent more likely to have employer-provided health insurance.
* Fixes a broken system that gives corporations far too much power. When workers try and organize unions, they are often harassed and intimidated; 25 percent of companies unlawfully fire pro-union workers.
* Restores fairness and the promise of the American Dream, with a robust middle class, economic growth, and shared prosperity.

It’s time our economy worked for everyone again. It’s time for the Employee Free Choice Act.

Here's what the Employee Free Choice Act does do

It gives workers a choice between secret ballots and majority
sign-up.
Once a majority of workers make it clear that they want a
union, they should get a union: employers should not be allowed to hijack the
process.

The Employee Free Choice Act also strengthens penalties against
employers who break the law.
Too many unscrupulous employers get
away with breaking labor laws because the current penalties are too weak. The
Employee Free Choice Act would increase penalties against employers who
illegally fire or retaliate against pro-union workers during an organizing
campaign or an effort to obtain a first contract.

And the bill allows employers or employees to request mediation
if they’re unable to negotiate a first contract.
Under current law,
anti-union employers often drag workers through lengthy negotiations by
delaying bargaining sessions, withholding relevant information, and putting
forth bogus proposals. Even though these tactics are illegal, there are no
effective deterrents to prevent “surface bargaining.” The Employee Free
Choice Act will strengthen workers’ ability to achieve a first contract
within a reasonable period of time.

Here's what the Employee Free Choice Act does not do

The Employee Free Choice Act makes no change to the current
union election process.
It simply amends the law about majority
sign-up to put the choice of how to form a union in workers’ hands, not their bosses’.

The Employee Free Choice Act does not create a "new approach"
to forming unions.
Majority sign-up has existed since at least
1935, and major corporations like AT&T recognize majority-signup as
a completely legitimate way to determine the will of its workforce.

The Employee Free Choice Act does not make workers more
susceptible to coercion.
In fact, it reduces coercion substantially.
Workers in "secret ballot" elections are twice as likely (46 percent vs.
23 percent) as those in majority sign-up campaigns to report that management
coerced them to oppose a union. But only 4.6 percent of workers who signed
a card with a union organizer – fewer than one in 20 – reported that the
presence of a union organizer made them feel pressured to sign the card.

Maryland State Fair 2009

Jenna and I went to the Maryland Sate Fair yesterday at the Timonium Fairgrounds. After 50 years in Maryland this was the first time I had ever been to the State Fair. It was a beautiful day with very low humidity and temperatures in the mid to upper 70's.We parked about 1/4 mile from the main and gate and for me the toughest part of the entire day was uses the crutches to navigate my way to the stand inside the gate where we could rent a wheelchair. Jenna was a real trooper and pushed me through the Fairgrounds all day in the wheelchair.
There is 2 different levels of competition at the State Fair. There is the 4H level and then there is the open level. Each level is broken into different department. There is the Farm & Garden Department, which is home to vegetables, fruit, farm crops, wine, honey and flowers. There is the Home Arts Department, which is home to crafts, baking, sewing, photography, etc. There is the Livestock Department, which is home to large animals such as dairy, beef, sheep, etc. Finally, there is Horses, which includes all types of horses.
Most of the animal competitions has already taken place but we did have an opportunity to see some milking cow, horses, chickens and many different animals. There was a station where you could pay $3.00 to milk a cow but it wasn't open. I would have liked to have tried that. We even got to take in a pig giving birth to 13 baby pigs in what they called the birthing center. That was pretty amazing to witness.
The food was awesome too. Of course there were the Maryland favorites, crabs and oysters. There was pit beef, ham, sausages with peppers and onions, lamb either on the rack on in gyros, turkey legs ribs and of course all your other Fair favorites. Here's Jenna with a serving of Rocky Road ice cream.
All and all the State fair is a wonderful way to spend the day. They do charge an $8.00 admission but on many days offer a $20.00 ride band which allows you to go on unlimited rides from 12-6. There is a good assortment of carnival rides as well and on the weekend they offer stage entertainment. I think it would be significantly more crowded on the weekend so if you don't like the crowds go during the week.
